Pilot Operated Pressure Reducing Valves: Steam, Water or Hydraulics?

Pressure Control Guide

A pilot operated pressure reducing valve uses a small pilot stage to control a larger main valve and regulate pressure downstream. The name appears on steam regulators, water control valves and hydraulic cartridges. Start by identifying the service: a diagram or pressure rating from one family does not establish that another family will work in your system.

1. Choose the correct service before comparing models

  • Steam: assess the inlet pressure, required outlet pressure and changing steam load. TLV explains that pilot-operated steam valves use pilot pressure to load a piston or diaphragm, allowing closer control over varying loads than its direct-acting comparison. TLV steam PRV guide
  • Water: confirm the actual water temperature and the inlet/outlet operating points. For example, Watts PR500 is a water valve with a specified maximum operating temperature of 70°C. Its data sheet includes a cavitation check using upstream and desired downstream pressure. A suitable connection size alone does not establish suitability. Watts PR500 data sheet
  • Hydraulic circuit: identify the regulated branch, port connections and whether pressure reducing alone or reducing/relieving is required. Danfoss lists these as distinct functions within its cartridge range. Danfoss pressure-reducing valves

Reject a proposed model if its documented medium or temperature range does not match the service. A water-valve example is not a steam selection, and a hydraulic cartridge schematic is not a piping diagram for a steam station.

2. Check what the pilot actually controls

In the steam arrangement illustrated by Spirax Sarco, downstream pressure acts against the pilot adjustment spring. The pilot changes the pressure loading the main diaphragm. As downstream pressure rises, the pilot closes and the main valve moves toward closed. This describes that arrangement; use the selected model’s diagram to identify its sensing connection and control passages. Spirax Sarco self-acting pressure controls

The hydraulic example is different. Danfoss’s pilot-operated reducing/relieving spool regulates flow from port 2 to port 1; if external forces raise the regulated pressure sufficiently, the relieving function can connect port 1 to tank port 3. The reducing-only version does not provide that same relieving action. Confirm the exact symbol and port function before treating two cartridges as alternatives. These port numbers belong to the illustrated Danfoss designs.

3. Match the operating range and installation

For steam, record minimum, normal and maximum demand, including startup. TLV identifies small loads with acceptable pressure droop as candidates for direct-acting valves; larger or varying loads needing closer pressure control can favor pilot operation. Pilot-operated is not automatically the better choice for every small load.

Spirax Sarco cautions against oversizing and stresses clean, dry steam and the appropriate separator/strainer arrangement. It also explains the need for downstream safety or relief protection when downstream equipment cannot withstand the maximum possible upstream pressure. Selecting a reducing valve does not complete that protection assessment.

For a water valve such as PR500, check the manufacturer’s cavitation chart at the proposed pressures and its capacity data at the required flow. Its installation instructions call for isolation valves on both sides and recommend an upstream filter. Apply those requirements to that model rather than copying them as a complete specification for every PRV.

Details to prepare for a suitability check

Provide the medium, temperature, inlet-pressure range, desired downstream pressure, minimum/normal/maximum flow and connection requirements. Add the existing model code and circuit or piping drawing for a replacement. State whether the task is normal downstream regulation, handling externally generated branch pressure, or protecting equipment against overpressure. Those are different checks; the abbreviation “PRV” alone is not a sufficient specification.
